The Scratch partnership with the Interurban Gallery continues. We are proud to produce memorable music and art/multi media events at this wonderful space.
Saturday April 2:
April Fools plus 1. I like all three of these bands, so should you. Have you been to a show at the Interurban yet? No? Like Shania says… “don’t be stupid”. Like Shania, all three of these bands have a hint of twang. Unlike Shania, none of these bands suck dog-dicks.

SUN WIZARD
Light Organ Recording Artists Sun Wizard release their new album Positively 4th Avenue on March 29th, let this show serve as a semi official album release party. Sun Wizard recently played CMW in Toronto and earned themselves a handy 4 NNNN review from Now Magazine too. Now Magazine
bio:
Sun Wizard are your favorite band from when you were in high school, back when the whole world was a little bigger and everything you touched was a bit more golden. You knew all the words to their songs, you bought every last one of their records, and rushed out to the record store every time their new single came on the radio. They were the soundtrack to that endless summer, and they colored your adolescent fever with the helpless optimism that everything was going to be just fine.
Sun Wizard officially started playing music together as a four piece in the spring of 2009, when bass player Francesco Lyon came home from a few strange months in Toronto. However, the seeds were planted on a hazy trip to Vancouver Island the summer before, where a couple of days turned into a lost weekend that saw Francesco, accompanied by James Younger and Malcolm Jack, Sun Wizard's alternating songwriter/vocalists, stagger onto stage and play an impromptu acoustic show. The following spring, carrying a suitcase full of lyrics, the band became a band when Ben Frey sat down at the drums. Sun Wizard got a jam space with a panther blanket on the wall, bought plenty of candles, incense and rugs, rehearsed a bunch, and booked their first show. Since then they have played with bands, like Vetiver, The Cave Singers, Deer Tick, Girls, and Immaculate Machine among others.
Fast forward to 2011 and Sun Wizard are now ready to release their debut full-length album "Positively 4th Avenue". Recorded in Vancouver at Mushroom Studios with producers Dave Ogilvie (David Bowie, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails) and Colin Stewart (Cave Singers, Black Mountain, Ladyhawk) Positively 4th Avenue builds on the promise of the band's 2009 self-released EP "Maybe They Were Right". Influenced by classic bands like Television, Steve Miller Band, Fleetwood Mac, and Tom Petty, Sun Wizard wanted to make an album with a similar vibe: Catchy, melodic rock n' roll with big guitar riffs and tight harmonies. You can hear the band channeling that often-elusive element in rock music; that magic dust that gets pulled out from the ether every so often. It's unexpected, and when traced it seems to act like the common thread in a lineage of influential song driven rock n' roll bands. Sun Wizard could easily be Jack White's younger brothers, Tom Petty's nephews, or Bob Dylan's grandchildren. In short, they sound like a real band; a band that have always been there.

A PALE BLUE
Never satisfied, and always looking ahead, A Pale Blue continues to tinker with their grungy, bummer, country rock sound. The band is taking more chances with their live show, which now ranges from a thoughtful shuffle to pounding guitar anthems. Harmonies are treated with thought and the 'no fun' lyrics of singer songwriter Brock Allen paint a dark and complex picture. Expect the unexpected with this band.

THE SHACK
The Shack is an outpost at the border between memory and myth. Inside there is a man (Bryce Janssens of Lord Beginner) who receives regular paychecks for guarding this remote yet important territory in the empire to which he is an employee and servant. Although it is a draughty and lonely place, there is company in the characters of books left behind by the previous caretaker and safety in the knowledge that the distant murderous war will never touch this quiet frontier.

HIMALAYAN BEAR, PRAIRIE CAT, and CHRIS-A-RIFFIC
This show was supposed to be a Lord Beginner show. They broke up instead. What the fuck is up with that? I really liked them. Figures. So instead we got the brother of Lord Beginner’s Patrick Beattie, HIMALAYAN BEAR (aka Ryan Beattie) to play. Fair trade, I love it.
HIMALAYAN BEAR
Absolutely Kosher, Self Righteous, and Aaargh! Recording artists bring their definitively oddball and pretty much uncategorizable and cool "Hawaiian" music to the Gallery all the way from Victoria. They will have just finished up a tour with New Pornographer Kathryn Calder. Their third album, Hard Times, comes out on Absolutely Kosher Records on August 2! Ryan also plays in Frog Eyes and Chet, for those of you keeping score.
PRAIRIE CAT
Your old friend Prairie Cat brings back his seven piece orchestra to remind Vancouver what pop sounded like in the sweet 70's. Debuting new material from his upcoming album, fans of Jeff Lynne, The Mael Brothers and breaking up will feel right at home
CHRIS-A-RIFFIC
For all the training he has, he is not a very good piano player.

For our first fair we have the following fine labels participating so far:Mint, Sudden Death, Light Organ, Storyboard, Triple Crown, Needs More Ram, Global Symphonic, Scratch, Grotesque Modern, Pop Drones, Mongrel zine, and many others. Other record stores and private dealers will also be there. Each label will get a chance to take a turn DJing and spinning their favourite records and CDs.
We are looking for more labels, stores, and private collectors to participate. The cost is $25 for a table (8x 30) or $15 for a half table (4x 30). We rent and bring in the tables and basically are covering our costs for this amount.

DRAWN SHIP
Low Domestic CD & Digital
SCRATCH#64
Out now in Canada! International release Tuesday Nov. 13, 2012
ABOUT THE BAND
These East Vancouverites play loud, stripped-down, thick guitar and drums with unpredictable arrangements and gorgeous
melodies. 11 tracks that hold
true to the original less-is-more artistic idea of Drawn Ship.
ABOUT THE ALBUM
Low Domestic is about death: The death of marriages, of affairs, of friendships, of ideals, and of people. The songwriting for Low Domestic started when Lyn Heinemann, miserable
and wallowing after a breakup, decided to make an album exclusively of break-up songs. Six songs in, her minor obsession with Louis Riel steered her to write “Execution” which
details the killing of Thomas Scott at Riel’s orders (for which M. Riel was later hanged). From there the break-up theme fell apart: “Adventure Series” chronicles the death of a
young WWII pilot, and “the Best Ones Go” and “Glass Eye” are stories of childhood sexual abuse, addiction, and death that Heinemann wrote following the loss of two teenaged clients
in her work as an addictions counsellor in the Downtown Eastside.

Zev walked into the first Scratch store in 1991 and immediately became a beloved part of our own absurd little family . We had just started a record label, and putting out the ambitious and respected music Zev was involved with was an honour, and gave us global legitimacy.
Scratch put out 5 releases featuring Zev: Three remarkably different experimental rock albums by his band Nimrod, whose surviving members Tim Olive and Sam Lohman are also top shelf gentlemen, as well as a solo CD by his alter ego Roughage, and a split single by Nimrod; with the B-side being a karaoke booth recording between Zev's Roughage and vocal noise legend Masonna. I filled in on drums for one North American Nimrod tour when Sam couldn’t make the trip from Japan, and had Zev sleep on my couch for days, weeks, & months on multiple occasions. I recall him contributing to the rent in the form of buying the house a juicer. Or taking you for a ride in his hearse. If Zev crossed your path in a day, you were guaranteed a moment of absurd inspiration, unintentional comedy, and twisted insight; both from his art, and his humanity.
Zev had numerous musical projects, and he collaborated with an impressive who's who in the international noise and experimental scenes. A continuously visual thinking artist, Zev went on to make a number of documentaries that were well received (What About Me: The Rise of the Nihilist Spasm Band) and not so well received (Casuistry: The Art of Killing a Cat)… Common to everything Zev ever did was an amazing sense of humour and playfulness, with an equal thirst for subversion, taken to extreme levels. Zev lived to challenge all that was normal. I believe he knew he was a freak of sorts, and anything “normal” in the world he couldn’t understand. I believe he lived his life celebrating the unusual, and challenged everyone in his path to do the same. He had truly massive balls. There is talk of a massive tool to match, but I digress…Zev was a restless spirit and needed to keep moving, mentally and geographically, and experience all that the world had to offer. In his final years he tackled his sickness with bravery, humour and spirit, and I believe he was unafraid of the unknown to follow.
Zev Asher was a true artist in every moment of his life. He achieved more, and gave more, in his too short 50 years on the planet, than most of us could fathom. Travel on my friend.
